John Tristram was born in 1936 on a farm in Gloucestershire UK, John loved to ride his bike up the hilly Gloucestershire countryside which laid the perfect foundation building impressive legs cycling all over the English countryside. By early 1950s John had signed up as a merchant marine and then sailed over the Atlantic and decided to stay in New York City. To cut a long story short he started training seriously at Abe Goldberg's gym.
When Larry Scott won the IFBB Mr. America contest in 1962, John Tristram also competed in the same competition but in the short-man category, which he won. After winning his division in the Mr. America he moved to the California, the mecca of bodybuilding and his short bodybuilding career really started to take off.
Using a 3 times per week total body workout and following Rheo Blair's advice on high protein low carbohydrate diet and using Blair protein and amino acid supplements, John put on some serious upper-body musculature, which later proved to be his best feature. Although this English-born athlete showed great promise, his career was very brief.
From placing 6th in the AAU Mr. Eastern America in 1957 to winning the IFBB Mr. America in the short class 1962 and then Mr. Venice Beach the same year. John went on to place 2nd at the NABBA Mr. Universe in 1963. He placed 2nd again in the 1964 IFBB Mr. Universe and after taking a break for 10 years studying languages at UCLA, went on to place 2nd again at the 1974 WBBG Mr. International.
John Tristram was a highly intelligent student and landed up teaching French at UCLA until he died in 1985 in his Los Angeles home. His brief bodybuilding career was something that contributed a lot to the sport at that time.
