Arnold Schwarzenegger Bodybuilding Diet
What was Arnold Schwarzenegger's diet?
Back in Arnold's day, when bodybuilders wanted to gain muscle mass they would eat a lot of meats, chicken, fish, whole eggs, cheese, nuts etc. They would also drink a lot of whole milk. Basically they ate a very high protein and high calorie diet eating 6 to 8 small, high protein meals throughout the day, while lifting very heavy weights for low reps but high sets.
Arnold ate 30 to 50 grams of protein at each meal, which he had every 2 to 3 hours. He didn't eat high carbs, but it wasn't zero either he took in aprox. 60 to 100 grams of carbohydrates a day.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Supplements
Did Arnold Schwarzenegger use supplements?
There weren't many supplements back then except for protein powder, amino acids, liver tablets, vitamins and minerals. But Arnold did use what was available at the time. It is said that while Arnold and other top bodybuilders were paid to endorse Joe Weider's supplements in the Weider magazines they were secretly buying and using Rheo Blair's supplements.
Rheo Blair showed bodybuilders such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Frank Zane and Larry Scott, the importance of protein drinks mixed with milk, cream and eggs along with amino acid supplements for building muscle and losing fat.
Here is an example of the type of protein drinks they used:
2 scoops protein
8 oz whole milk
4 oz heavy whipping cream
2 whole eggs
They also took handfuls of amino acid capsules and desiccated liver tablets between meals to be sure their muscles were always supplied with protein. This must have really helped with recovery from their workouts because they trained each bodypart 3 times every week and grew like weeds!
One Rheo's employee of says he remembers Arnold and Franco pull up to Rheo's house and load Arnold's car with cases of protein and supplements, so much that the car sagged downward as they peeled away.
